PUTIN … accuses U.S. of trying to lure Russia into war
Reuters, Natalia Zinets and Vladimir SoldatkinFebruary 1, 2022

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the West on Tuesday of deliberately creating a scenario designed to lure it into war and ignoring Russia’s security concerns over Ukraine.

In his first direct public comments on the crisis for nearly six weeks, a defiant Putin showed no sign of backing down from security demands that the West has called non-starters and a possible excuse to launch an invasion, which Moscow denies.

“It’s already clear now … that fundamental Russian concerns were ignored,” Putin said at a news conference with the visiting prime minister of Hungary, one of several NATO leaders trying to intercede with him as the crisis has intensified.

CHINA … On Lunar New Year, Chinese offer prayers at temples
Associated Press, Sam McNeilFebruary 1, 2022

Chinese people rang in the Lunar New Year on Tuesday despite pandemic restrictions, as small crowds gathered at temples to offer traditional prayers for the Year of the Tiger.

At the Lama Temple in Beijing, dozens of people bowed in prayer before the ornate west gate of the Tibetan Buddhist site that was shut because of pandemic restrictions.

Wang Ying, who works at an accounting firm, said praying outside the temple was better than burning incense at home.

“I think sincerity is more important than burning incense sticks,” she said, after finishing her devotions. Wang also said she is looking forward to the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics on Friday. Marking the holiday, Beijing residents also took photos outside displays for the Games in the city’s central Tiananmen Square.

American colleges and universities have been both commended and criticized for being hotbeds of “wokeness.” There has been episode after episode where a university professor, student, or administrator has been accused of some verbal slight or inappropriate action when it comes to litmus tests related to race, gender, or related diversity concerns. A number of colleges have increased their staffing of administrators who focus on enforcement of policies, or resolutions of controversies, that arise from campus disputes concerning violation of a variety of left leaning wokeness values.

Some believe these campus controversies bring an appropriate level of attention to a new vision of social justice, and some believe it is an indication of an illiberal left that has become intolerant of any expression that does not conform to the way they wish to define socially appropriate norms. However, the point of this column is not to wade into the midst of this debate, but instead suggest that these campus dust ups miss the point and have failed to recognize the real fight both sides of these debates need to focus on

CHINA … COVID cases mount as athletes, personnel arrive in Beijing
Reuters, Karolos GrohmannFebruary 1, 2022

During the past four days China has detected 119 COVID-19 cases among athletes and personnel involved in the Beijing Winter Olympics, with authorities imposing a “closed loop” bubble to keep participants, staff and media separated from the public.

The tally from the weekend showed 37 new cases on Sunday, and 34 on Saturday, with most testing positive after arrival at the airport, Games organisers said on Monday.

Russian biathlete Valeria Vasnetsova said her own Olympic ambitions were over after testing positive twice following her arrival in Beijing, one of three Russian positive tests announced on Monday.

“Unfortunately, my Olympic dream will remain just a dream,” Vasnetsova wrote on social media. “Maybe one day I will find the strength to rise again but it will be a completely different story.”

CANADA … PM Trudeau tests positive for COVID, rips anti vaccine demo
Associated Press, Rob GilliesFebruary 1, 2022

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday he has tested positive for COVID-19 but is “feeling fine” and will continue to work remotely from home.

Trudeau said two of his children have COVID-19 and a test Monday revealed he has been infected as well.

The prime minister, who has received two vaccine shots and a booster shot, used a televised virtual news conference to denounce anti-vaccine protesters who filled Canada’s capital to complain about COVID restrictions.

About 6,500 people have been told to evacuate their homes in Winston-Salem, North Carolina due to a fire at a fertilizer plant storing over 300 tons of potentially explosive ammonium nitrate, city officials said on Tuesday.

The blaze at the Weaver Fertilizer Plant on North Cherry Street started Monday evening. Residents within one mile of the plant were urged to evacuate and stay away from their homes for up to 48 hours.

“We abandoned the fire fighting operation because there’s a large volume of ammonium nitrate on site,” Winston-Salem fire chief Trey Mayo said.
