Summary
This post will highlight the most competitive Governor races in 2022.
Go here to see more information on all the Governor races.
United States gubernatorial elections will be held on November 8, 2022, in 36 states and three territories. Special elections may also take place (depending on state law) if other gubernatorial seats are vacated.
As most governors serve four-year terms, the last regular gubernatorial elections for all but two of the seats took place in 2018. The governors of New Hampshire and Vermont, each of whom serves two-year terms, ran in the 2020 elections. The 2022 gubernatorial elections will take place concurrently with several other federal, state and local elections.
Once the 2022 primaries are completed, this post will have a summary of all 34 US Senate races and links to more information.

News
Thirty-six of the 50 states will elect governors this year, with Democrats mostly on the defensive, seeking to protect swing states where the party won in the 2018 wave.
Democrats’ most vulnerable governorship is in Kansas, where Gov. Laura Kelly defied the odds four years ago to take control in Topeka. After that, Republicans are targeting Democratic incumbents in Wisconsin, Nevada, Maine, Michigan and New Mexico, along with open seats in Oregon and Pennsylvania.
The governor’s mansion has recently been a strong point for Republicans, as they’ve held a majority of the country’s governorships since the 2010 election. In fact, they currently control 28 governorships to the Democrats’ 22, and with 36 governorships up this year, they could widen that advantage, especially considering that President Biden’s approval rating is in the low 40s and the national political environment looks friendly toward Republicans. However, GOP gains in 2022 are not a given.
As it turns out, the two most likely seats to flip may be Maryland and Massachusetts, where popular Republican governors are leaving office, and the GOP could end up nominating candidates who struggle to appeal in those deep-blue states. Meanwhile, primary battles in Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin could also hurt GOP efforts to capture Democratic-held governorships. After all, while gubernatorial races have become more nationalized, voters still show a greater tendency to break from their baseline partisan preferences in these races than in contests for Congress, meaning a poor nominee can still cause the seemingly favored party to stumble.
That said, even though Republicans have two of the toughest seats to defend this cycle, they also have their own juicy target in Kansas, the reddest state Democrats control. Moreover, Democrats hold more highly competitive seats, which could easily flip. Based on early race ratings data from Inside Elections, Sabato’s Crystal Ball and The Cook Political Report, we’ve identified 10 states that are especially competitive, six of which Democrats currently control. This list could certainly change, but at this point, the GOP is playing on friendlier turf, as the table below shows.
Women, women of color and LGBTQ+ people are competing around the country for a chance to run their state’s top office.
This year, 36 states are scheduled to hold elections for governor around the country and at least a dozen will include major bids from women, women of color and LGBTQ+ people. As of May 2022, eight incumbent women governors are seeking reelection; 23 women are running for open seats in eight states, according to data from the Center for American Women and Politics.
On the ballot is the potential for history, with several candidates poised to break representation barriers around gender and race:
- At least 30 Republican women are running for governor this year, already breaking the 2018 record of 20.
- Several women are running to become the first Black woman elected governor.
- Women are poised to be contenders in several states that have never elected a woman governor.
- Candidates this year could break the record for concurrent number of women governors at any one time (nine).
These bids for statewide office increasingly reflect the polarization of politics on issues including education, particularly around race; health care; immigration; LGBTQ+ rights; policing; and voting. Few candidates are making pitches that center around their gend
