There is a rising demand for care from veterans and their families after recent events in Afghanistan, according to U.S. Rep. Greg Murphy.

During a U.S. House Veterans Affairs Committee Markup Meeting on Monday, Murphy, a Republican who represents Craven County in N.C.’s 3rd Congressional District, introduced an amendment to the VA budget to allocate $100 million to support the VA’s 300 community-based counseling centers nationwide, according to a statement from Murphy’s office.

Craven County U.S. Rep. Greg Murphy speaks to a small crowd in August 2020.

Members looked to approve the $18 billion VA budget for fiscal year 2022.

“(The centers) provide much-needed counseling, community and peer support services to veterans and their families, including Gold Star families, who are struggling to adjust to life after military service or, sadly enough, grieving the loss of a loved one,” Murphy said during the meeting. “As a physician, I know that t that kind of care can literally be lifesaving.
