Sen. Jeanne Shaheen says the person elected president in November should nominate a replacement for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
“This next justice will determine the future of civil rights and voting rights, health care access, and reproductive freedoms for every American, and the voices of the people should be heard,” Shaheen said in a statement on Monday. “The election has begun, with people across the country voting and Granite Staters set to cast their ballots in mere weeks.”
But back when former President Barack Obama nominated Merrick Garland to fill the vacancy left by Justice Antonin Scalia’s death, Shaheen said the Senate was obliged to fill vacancies with all haste.

Jeanne Shaheen
Current Position: US Senator since 2009
Affiliation: Democrat
Candidate: 2020 US Senator
The first woman in U.S. history to be elected both a Governor and a United States Senator, New Hampshire’s Jeanne Shaheen is a trailblazer with a reputation for working across the aisle to get things done. She is committed to serving the citizens of New Hampshire and is known for her common-sense leadership, hard work and dedication to improving the lives of the middle class. She has served in the Senate since 2009 and is a member of the Senate Committees on Armed Services, Foreign Relations, Appropriations, Small Business and Entrepreneurship and the Select Committee on Ethics.
As a former small business owner, Senator Shaheen knows how tough it can be for entrepreneurs, who often operate on razor thin profit margins. On the Small Business Committee, she’s expanded small businesses’ access to credit and markets. Her annual Experience New Hampshire event in Washington, D.C., gives New Hampshire businesses a forum to showcase their products and services to policymakers and government officials. Shaheen continues to lead efforts in the Senate to protect New Hampshire businesses from having to unfairly collect internet sales taxes for other states.

Federal Spending
We don’t have to look further than the Covid-19 Pandemic to understand just how important fiscal responsibility is in federal budgeting. When times are good, we have to hold the line on spending so we have the flexibility to react when times are not so good. Our huge national debt threatens the country’s prosperity, national security and future generations. Yet the career politicians in Washington, like Jeanne Shaheen, seem incapable of saying “no” to liberal special interest spending. In building his business, Corky has already demonstrated how to successfully balance a budget, manage debt, and prioritize spending.
Judicial Nominations
Among the most important duties of a United States Senator is to provide “advice and consent” on the nomination of Federal and Supreme Court justices. Corky will only approve judges that have demonstrated strict adherence to the Constitution and judicial restraint, rather than trying to create new laws in their decisions.
Civil Rights

2nd Amendment
Corky believes in freedom, liberty, and in the right to bear arms, envisioned by our Founders and protected by our Constitution. He will fight any legislation that would infringe upon the Constitutional right of Granite Staters to defend themselves, their families, their homes or to engage fully in hunting and other shooting sports.
Economy
Jeanne Shaheen
Senator Shaheen knows we need to continue to create jobs and lay the foundation for long-term economic growth. As a former small business owner, she understands that it is the private sector, not the government, which will create jobs that put people back to work and strengthen the economy. But she also knows that the government has an important role to play in creating the right atmosphere for entrepreneurship and innovation.
Senator Shaheen is committed to helping small businesses grow and create the jobs that will keep America competitive in the 21st century.
Corky Messner
JOBS AND THE ECONOMY
Small businesses are the backbone of New Hampshire’s economy. And they are getting back to work safely thanks to President Trump and Governor Sununu. Corky knows the challenges small businesses face. After graduating from West Point and his service in the United States Army, he built a business from scratch, creating hundreds of good jobs. He is running for the United States Senate to preserve the American Dream for New Hampshire families and for future generations. Corky believes strongly in individual liberty, economic freedom, low taxes and free market capitalism. He believes the best way the government can help our economy is to get out of the way.
Education
Jeanne Shaheen
Senator Shaheen has been committed to improving K-12 and higher education for New Hampshire students throughout her career. As a former Dover school teacher, Shaheen understands that a high quality public education is essential for America’s children. She believes that every child must have the education and skills necessary to compete in the global economy. That’s why she has focused on giving students greater access to education in the growing fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.
As Governor and State Senator, Shaheen made it a priority to strengthen New Hampshire’s schools. She continues that work in the United States Senate and is committed to strengthening our public education system to ensure that every child graduates from high school prepared to succeed.
Corky Messner
Education
A businessman, West Point Graduate, and father of three, Corky believes that a high-quality education is foundational to accessing opportunity and achieving the American Dream. Corky opposes Washington mandates that take control and choices away from parents and local communities. He believes each child should have access to the education that best supports his or her academic success and it should be up to the family to make these important decisions. Families need educational choice – public schools, home school, charter and private schools.
Environment
Jeanne Shaheen
Transitioning to clean, alternative energy is critical to both our national security and our economy.
Senator Shaheen knows we face unprecedented energy and environmental challenges. We cannot continue to export dollars for imported oil from hostile regions of the world. Instead, we must confront the global threat of climate change, and at the same time we must meet our rapidly growing energy needs.
Shaheen has been a leader on energy efficiency policy throughout her career and is the co-author of bipartisan energy efficiency legislation.
In the Senate, Shaheen is a leading voice for comprehensive energy legislation that provides the incentives and certainty businesses are looking for to invest in clean energy.

Health Care
Jeanne Shaheen
Senator Shaheen believes that we must transform our health care system to provide better care at a lower cost. She voted in favor of the 2010 Affordable Care Act because she believes it is an important first step to making essential changes to our health care system.
Already, the health reform law has made a significant impact on the lives of many Americans. No longer can health insurance companies put lifetime dollar limits on health benefits or drop coverage if someone gets sick. Children under 19 can no longer be denied coverage if they have a pre-existing condition, and parents can keep their children on their insurance plans up to age 26. Small businesses across New Hampshire have been able to take advantage of tax credits to help provide insurance for their employees, and seniors have seen a reduction in the price of prescription drugs and now have access to free annual wellness visits with their doctor.
Senator Shaheen recognizes that more work needs to be done to make care affordable and accessible. She remains committed to offering common sense ideas that will improve the quality of care people receive while containing costs.
Corky Messner
HealthCare
Our families (and the small businesses they work in) are drowning in the costs of health insurance. Corky supports the free-market healthcare system that has seen our nation lead the world in care and life-saving innovations. He supports transparency in services which he believes will help drive down costs. He will stand against the socialist system supported by so many Washington D.C. Democrats. Corky supports care for those with pre-existing conditions and permitting young people to remain on their family’s health insurance plans, but does not think the status quo helps Granite Staters.
Immigration
Jeanne Shaheen
Senator Shaheen is a supporter of comprehensive immigration reform and recently voted in favor of bipartisan, commonsense immigration reform legislation that would strengthen border security, require all employers to use an E-Verify system to ensure no workers are here illegally, and provide a tough but fair path to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants who are already living in the United States. She believes that commonsense immigration reform in the United States has been long overdue and is pleased to see both parties coming together to address this issue.
Corky Messner
Immigration & Border Security
My grandparents immigrated to this country from Lebanon, so I know first hand that the United States is a nation rich with people who have immigrated from all over the world to embrace our way of life. Legal immigration has contributed to the success of this country. Sadly though, our system is broken – delaying those seeking opportunity by following our laws, but rewarding those who break the rules. The security of our nation and protection of its communities from criminals, drugs and human trafficking, depends upon our willingness to stop illegal immigration and protect our borders.
Safety
Jeanne Shaheen
As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Shaheen is dedicated to strengthening America’s national security. She believes that a strong and active United States is fundamental to securing our national interests at home and abroad. Senator Shaheen also believes that U.S. global leadership is directly tied to the strength of our ideals, our alliances and our diplomacy, and she is working to ensure our national security policies reflect our broader democratic values.
Today, the world is more interconnected than ever before, and our nation’s economy and security are directly linked to events across the globe. Many businesses in New Hampshire and throughout the U.S. rely on access to markets and consumers thousands of miles away. The threats of the 21st century – from terrorism and extremism to weapons of mass destruction, failed states to cyber attacks, climate change to disease– are truly global and will require a balanced approach that leverages all of America’s ingenuity and power and contributions from our allies and partners.
Senator Shaheen believes that America’s leaders have a responsibility to leave the world a better and safer place for the next generation of Americans.

Veterans
Jeanne Shaheen
New Hampshire has a strong tradition of military service and honoring our commitment to veterans has been a top priority for Senator Shaheen. A member of the Senate Armed Service Committee, she has been a strong advocate for veterans, working to expand veterans’ access to health care, increase economic opportunity for veterans when they return home and making sure veterans receive the benefits they’ve earned and deserve. Coming from a family with a strong tradition of military service, Senator Shaheen understands the sacrifices service members and their families make and will continue to fight for veterans in New Hampshire and across the country.
Corky Messner
Veterans & Military
After graduating from West Point, Corky went on to serve as a Commanding Army Infantry Ranger, defending liberty guarding the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. Corky is proud to be the father of two West Point cadets – his oldest having just graduated in June.
Honoring the brave men and women who currently serve or have served our country is something Corky cherishes. National security is the first and most important responsibility of our federal government, thus he believes our military must always have the training and equipment necessary to succeed in their missions. However, he understands that America cannot and should not be the world’s policemen.
Corky also believes commitments to our veterans continue after their service. New Hampshire has a vibrant veteran community and our veterans should have the ability to receive quality health care locally in the Granite State rather than driving out-of-state to a full-service VA Hospital. To make that easier, he supports the Mission Act. To assist with education, he is proudly behind the Forever GI Bill. For those service members who sadly have fallen in duty, he knows our commitment to them must always continue through support to their families.
