4. Extreme weather
Climate experts say the most intense rain events are getting heavier and more frequent as the world warms due to fossil fuel pollution. A warmer atmosphere is capable of soaking up more moisture like a sponge and wringing it out in the form of gushing rainfall.

5. Lead paint
The EPA on Thursday finalized stricter rules for identifying and cleaning up lead paint dust in homes and child-care facilities across the US. Even low levels of lead exposure can hurt brain development in children and lead to lasting health effects. Foreign policy is how a country uses different strategies to guide its relationships with other countries and international organizations.

This means that foreign policy is made up of different global issues, relationships with other countries, and even domestic politics. The foreign policy of the U.S. government may change between different presidential administrations. However, the guiding principles of U.S. foreign policy remain constant: promotion of security, democracy, prosperity, and development in the United States and around the world.

In this video, learn more about how security, democracy, prosperity, and development inform U.S. foreign policy decisions.

Democracy vs Authoritarianism.
s/Political Discussion, ShadowMercureOctober 25, 2024

Sub Reddit discussion tagged “Political Theory”. Below is part of starter post.

Benevolent leaders get replaced by despots. Despots get overthrown. Empires fall. New ones rise, maybe with a different way of doing things. Some lead with soft power, mutual co-prosperity – others lead with domination and fear.

Which got me thinking. On average, do benevolent governments last longer than malevolent governments? In other words, would a loved king last longer on the throne than a feared king?

Or is the inverse true? If democracy lasts 250 years, and it is replaced by bad faith dictatorship, how long on average would that bad actor retain their power?

Musk and Putin take geopolitics back a century
Politico, Derek RobertsonOctober 25, 2024

Elon Musk just vaulted himself into some troubling historical company.

A bombshell report from The Wall Street Journal this morning revealed that Musk has secretly been in regular contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the past two years.

Musk might pitch himself to Americans as an avatar of the future, electrifying the car industry and leading humans to a sci-fi future on Mars. But the way he relates to geopolitics has unsettling echoes in America’s past, putting him in the company of business figures whose international misadventures have almost always been a black mark on their historical records.

Seasoned diplomats and government watchdogs were aghast at the report of Musk’s relationship with Putin, especially given Musk’s possible appointment to an ambiguous-but-sweeping role in a second Trump administration.

Adjacent Possible: Ways Of Flourishing

Thoughts on progress and the “compressed 21st century” from my speech accepting the Pioneer Award from the University of Pennsylvania.

[Last weekend, I had the great honor of receiving the Pioneer Award in Positive Psychology from UPenn’s Positive Psychology Center, for my work over the years advancing the cause of human flourishing. It was a very special day for me, in part because the legendary Martin Seligman—who founded the positive psych movement and whose work has inspired me in many ways over the years—actually gave me the award.

The story at the center of Extra Life was really the story of a single number, and how it changed over the preceding century: the number of years that the average human could expect to live given the conditions in the world at the time of their birth. In other words, life expectancy. A little more than a hundred years ago, at the end of the last global pandemic, human life expectancy stood at around 35 years. A hundred years later, it was more than 70. In the span of just one century, we managed to double the average human lifespan.
