Democracy vs Authoritarianism. Which do you think has more staying power, long-term?

Sub Reddit discussion tagged “Political Theory”. Below is part of starter post.

Benevolent leaders get replaced by despots. Despots get overthrown. Empires fall. New ones rise, maybe with a different way of doing things. Some lead with soft power, mutual co-prosperity – others lead with domination and fear.

Which got me thinking. On average, do benevolent governments last longer than malevolent governments? In other words, would a loved king last longer on the throne than a feared king?

Or is the inverse true? If democracy lasts 250 years, and it is replaced by bad faith dictatorship, how long on average would that bad actor retain their power?
