PBS NewsHour – August 16, 2024 (05:40)
Locked in a tight race for the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are eager to show voters how they’ll handle the economy if elected.
Both campaigns have a populist bent, but the candidates have differing visions for helping Americans contending with the high living expenses that remain even as the recent spike in inflation has largely passed.
Harris spoke Friday afternoon about the economic proposals she’s rolled out this week, including enhanced tax credits for kids, housing assistance and efforts to stop price gouging. She described her forward-looking agenda as “an opportunity economy,” where Americans are given a real chance to succeed, while saying Trump is only focused on helping the wealthy and big businesses.
New York Times columnist David Brooks and Washington Post associate editor Jonathan Capehart join Geoff Bennett to discuss the week in politics, including Vice President Kamala Harris’ economic policy proposals, former President Trump’s comments about Medal of Honor recipients and which campaign has the momentum heading into the final months of the race.

This morning, economists got something they’ve been waiting three years for: an absolute snooze-fest of an inflation report.
“To be honest, this was probably the dullest CPI we’ve had in a long while,” wrote Bloomberg senior editor Chris Anstey. “Which of course is what the Fed wants.”
“Tame.” “Benign.” Those are some of the adjectives that analysts used to describe the Consumer Price Index reading for July. “It is the ultimate ‘no news is good news’ report,” wrote Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Independent Advisor Alliance.
To be clear: This is high praise from the wonks. The consumer inflation reading is finally looking normal and healthy, and not so hideously distorted by the pandemic.
For all of us non-economists, it’s worth taking a moment to pump our fists in the air. And if any of you greater DC-area residents see Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell at the coffee shop, go ahead and high five him
