DC Metro Universities

The US onAir Network will be working with volunteers from DC metro universities, colleges, and nonprofit organizations to oversee the curation and moderators of posts, aircasts (online discussions), and in person events related to national US onAir Hub.

In this post, we have identified many of the university civic engagement, academic, internship programs, and research initiatives related to making democracy and civic responsibility a central aspect of higher learning. This post, over time, will have similar information on other participating organizations.

Contact ben.murphy@onair.cc for more information on how to involve your organization.

Johns Hopkins & Democracy

Johns Hopkins University is Democracy onAir’s most recent Champion of Democracy in the US and globally.  JHU has as many quality educational, research, and service programs helping to support local, state, and federal democracies as any university in the world. These programs will be further enhanced by the new JHU School of Government and Policy that will bring together programs throughout the university to pursue evidence-based solutions to society’s greatest challenges.

Some specifically democracy-enhancing programs include:

  • The NSF Agora Institute in the Homewood campus in Baltimore “strengthening global democracy through powerful civic engagement and informed, inclusive dialogue.”
  • Special events like the annual Democracy Day offering students an introduction to the democratic process and the ways they can engage with it and the Democracy and Freedom Festival a series of events aimed at educating citizens about the importance of democracy and its essential role in advancing freedom, justice, and equality for all.

For more information, see the JHU slide show and the experimental Agora Custom Hub.

George Mason University

George Mason University students, faculty, staff, and alumni have been major contributors to the development of the US onAir network. The GMU onAir chapter is the first onAir chapter in Virginia.

The GMU onAir chapter is affiliated with the US onAir Network of 50 state governance and election Hubs supporting the nationwide effort by colleges and universities across the country to make democracy and civic responsibility a central aspect of higher learning.

Chapter members:

  • Curate posts and moderate forums on politicians, issues, committees, and other topics related to Virginia congressional members and US governance and elections and
  • Produce aircasts (livestreamed, zoom discussions)  this fall with congressional candidates and, after the midterms, with their representatives

University of Virginia

Engaged UVA is the front door to community partnerships at UVA, designed to connect faculty, students and communities to mutually beneficial research and teaching programs. The site reflects current and ongoing community based initiatives, and allows users to search for associated faculty, courses, projects, and community partners.

Engaged UVA was launched by the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Outreach in 2017 in an effort to gather and highlight information on the community engaged programs already underway at the University. Faculty can use this site to find colleagues doing similar work. Students can find new courses and engagement opportunities. Community members can see the array of current and ongoing programs. Questions about the programs should be addressed to program directors.
